BMI and Strength Training: What the Number Can and Cannot Tell a Lifter

Why lifting changes the interpretation
BMI does not separate fat mass from lean mass. Two people with the same height and weight can have different body composition, strength, and health markers. Research using DXA measurements has shown that muscle mass can materially change how BMI relates to body-fat percentage and health outcomes. See the population study of muscle mass and BMI.
That limitation does not make BMI useless. It means the number needs context, especially for people who have built more muscle than the population average.
Use BMI for the question it answers
BMI can provide a quick weight-for-height category and a trend when body weight changes. It cannot diagnose body composition, explain why weight changed, or measure lifting performance.
For a strength trainee, review BMI alongside waist measurement, relevant clinical markers, body-composition data when available, and performance records. Medical decisions belong with a qualified health professional who can interpret the full picture.
Keep strength progress separate from body-size progress
Use the 1RM calculator to estimate exercise-specific strength from load and reps. For powerlifting totals, DOTS, IPF GL Points, and Wilks normalize performance by body weight using different scoring models.
Those scores also answer a narrow question. They compare lifting performance, not health or body composition.
Add movement quality to the record
A rising estimated 1RM can come with a cleaner bar path, a slower grind, or a changed movement standard. Power VBT analyzes set video and records mean concentric velocity and trajectory for each rep. Keeping body weight, estimated 1RM, and movement data as separate fields prevents one number from pretending to explain everything.
